Spherical Mirrors

Concept Explanation

Spherical Mirrors

Spherical mirrors are a special type of curved mirrors in which the surface of the mirror forms a part of a sphere.  A highly polished curved surface whose reflecting surface is a cut part of a hollow sphere of a glass or any polished metal is called spherical mirror. The rear view mirrors in vehicles are spherical mirrors. The cut of portion of a sphere has two different surfaces. The hollow surface that is on the same side as the centre of the original sphere is called concave surface. The other surface which bulges out is called a convex surface. Curved mirrors produce images that are different from those formed by plane mirrors

Convex and Concave Mirrors:

These curved mirrors have two types of reflecting surfaces: It the surface that bulges out to form a convex surface is the reflecting surface it is called convex mirror,

and if the surface that curves inwards to form a concave surface is the reflecting surface it is called concave mirror.  The reflecting surfaces of curved mirrors are a part of a big sphere.
